I remember loving Peeps as they got older and chewier, but more than once I Peeped myself into the next size bathing suit when summer was just around the corner.
I wonder if in a thousand years from now when anthropologists study our current society they’ll be perplexed at the fact that we celebrate with sugar. Two hundred years ago, the average American ate only 2 pounds of sugar a year. In 1970, we ate 123 pounds per year. Today, the average American consumes almost 152 pounds of sugar in one year!
My blog on Wednesday Hey DING DONG (it’s not about the cupcakes) has to do with procrastination and it occurred to me that a great decision to stop putting off would be a decision to stop eating sugar. Having been off sugar for three years, I’m here to report how surprisingly sweet foods like nuts, peppers, tomatoes, onions, celery and beans are. Oh, and berries are like candy they’re so sweet to my tongue!
Last Christmas I was at my son’s home and there was a bowl of Almond Rocca and I decided I’d have one because it was one of my most favorite candies and it was Christmas! Telling myself ‘just one piece won’t hurt,’ I excitedly peeled off the gold foil and popped it into my mouth. As I crunched down on the candy, I was shocked and appalled! It was sickeningly sweet and I had to spit it out!
